U.S. Model 1850 Presentation Officer's Sword, 30'' blade with nicely etched scroll, Stand of Arms, and eagle motifs. Wire-wrapped skateskin grip with pierced guard, Phrygian helmet pommel cap, with top of hilt engraved ''Lieut. And. Riddle''. Iron scabbard is double brass banded with brass chape and throat rings. Upper band marked ''Adj. John Nyce/for Reg't P.R.V.C./33rd Reg't P.V.'', (4th PA Reserves 33rd Inf.), who started the war with altered flintlock muskets, and marched toward Manasses in 1862. This regiment fought continuously throughout the Civil War. Their glorious history reads like a novel, and no doubt both Riddle and Nyce played an important role. Condition is fine with good detail to etching on blade. All twisted copper wire is present, although loose in some places. Scabbard with dent to both sides of chape. Inscriptions show polishing over time, which has slightly thinned its definition. A great old sword with lots of history. Est.: $1,800-$2,400.
