U.S. Model 1850 Foot Officer's Sword and Militia NCO Sword
This lot consists of: 1) Civil War U.S. Model 1850 Foot Officer's Sword with 31-1/2 inch blade, acid etched with an American Eagle flanked with floral sprays on the obverse and "US" surrounded by floral sprays on the reverse. The blade has no makers or dealer markings. The sword has a regulation pattern, brass guard, pommel and quillion. The grip has been re-wrapped with black leather and re-wired. The sword does not have a scabbard. 2) Militia NCO sword with black leather scabbard. The sword has a gilded knights helm pommel, fluted bone handle, flared cross guard with shield shaped lagnets. The sword has a 28 inch straight blade with single, unstopped fuller. The blade has no decorations and is not marked. The black leather scabbard has a brass tip and a brass throat with frog stud. This style of sword was popular with state militias from about 1850 to 1870.

1) The 1850 Foot Officers sword is in good overall condition. The blade has a dark, mottled patina with no significant pitting and very faint etching. The brass hilt and pommel are in good condition. The leather grip cover and wire wrap are modern restorations. The sword is missing the scabbard. 2) The Militia NCO sword is in good conditon. The gilded brass pommel and guard are heavily tarnished and retain about 40% of the gilt finish. The bone grip has some age discoloration, yet is in very good overall condition. The blade is bright, wear is limited to minor nicks in the edge. The scabbard is in fair condition, the seam on the body is split, the brass throat is loose and the top is missing.
