U.S. Model 1847 Sapper's Musketoon, by Springfield Armory, lock dated 1855 as is correct for one of the 80 mfg'd that year of a total of 830; NSNV, .69 cal. smoothbore, 26'' barrel, iron fittings with the exception of blackened copper upper band with correct musketoon bayonet lug; forward bayonet lug brazed to barrel has gone missing, but outline and partial brazing remain; walnut stock, with ''VP'' eaglehead proof to barrel. According to author/historian Lee Rutledge, who is in possession of the 1853 & 1856 U.S. Ordnance reports from Texas, the musketoons were very unpopular with troops and officers, as not only did they kick like a mule, but they suffered different types of breakage, which explains why they are so often found with non-standard and somewhat later parts and hardware. Condition is very good showing light general pitting to barrel, a little bit more moderate near nipple bolster. Nipple appears to be a later replacement. Stock shows scuffs, scratches, d!
arkening near metal surfaces, and very minor separations near apex of lockplate. Correct iron-tipped bugle ramrod is present. Est.: $3,000-$5,000.
