Model 1843 Breech-Loading Percussion Carbine manufactured in 1847 by Simeon North of Middletown, Connecticut. North manufactured 10,500 Model 1843 Carbines for Ordnance Department contracts between 1844 and 1853. The Model 1843 Hall-North Carbine was the primary weapon of the U.S. Dragoons during the Mexican War. The smoothbore carbine has a breechblock is operated by a thumb lever on the right side of the breech. The hammer and percussion nipple are integral components of the breechblock. The carbine has a fixed rear sight mounted on the receiver. The cavalry sling bar and ring are mounted on the left side of the barrel band and receiver. A bright-finished cleaning rod is mounted in a slot on the lower portion of the stock and secured by a lug on the underside of the barrel. The carbine has a brown lacquer finish on the barrel, receiver, barrel bands trigger guard and buttplate. The hammer and breechblock are color case-hardened, The stock is oil-finished black walnut. The breechblock is roll-stamped: "U.S./S. NORTH/MIDLTN CONN./1847" in four lines. A small Ordnance "JH" sub-inspection mark is stamped on the right side of the receiver ahead of the breechblock. "H" sub-inspection marks are stamped on the receiver, trigger guard and upper barrel band. The Ordnance sub-inspector's mark which consists of the script initials "GWH" surrounded by a rectangle is stamped on the left stock flat behind the receiver. The Ordnance final inspection mark consisting of the script initials "WAT" with an oval border is stamped on the right stock flat behind the breech. The Model 1843 Hall-North Carbine was an advanced weapon when it was adopted and remained in service with a number of Federal cavalry regiments throughout most of the Civil War.

Serial Number: NSN
Condition:
The carbine is in very fine original condition and retains 70% of the brown lacquer and traces of the color case-hardened finish. Nearly all of the brown lacquer finish is present on the barrel, receiver and trigger guard. There is some minor edge wear on the barrel bands. The buttplate has 70% of the brown finish with some minor scratches on the bottom. The breechblock and hammer retain most of the muted case colors. The carbine appears to be un-fired; the percussion nipple and adjacent portions of the breechblock have no flash pitting. All of the markings on the receiver, breechblock and other components are crisp. The stock is in nearly new condition with raised, 'feathered' grain and nearly perfect Ordnance sub-inspection and final inspection marks. Wear is limited to a few very minor handling and storage marks. The carbine is in the original Mexican War configuration and is not one of the 5000 surplus Model 1843 carbines that had the barrels rifled and re-bored to .58 caliber in 1861 for re-sale to the Federal government. This is an outstanding example of the primary carbine carried by the U.S. Dragoons during the Mexican War and on the frontier of California, New Mexico and Texas in the years following the war.
