U.S. Model 1842 Springfield Musket.
Manufactured 1844 to 1855 at Springfield Armory. Features a 42" barrel, three barrel bands, single shot, smooth bore, and .69 caliber. All metal parts finished in the bright. Steel ramrod with trumpet head. Bayonet lug on bottom. Walnut stock. VP eagle head on barrel. Stock has U.S. eagle and is dated 1852. Tang is dated 1852. Unit ID plaque at wrist (30). ID number 297D is etched on left plate. All metal is a smooth clean gun metal silver. Perfect action. Excellent walnut stock with no cracks. The fore end and last 2" of butt have been finely checkered. There is an additional brass ID tag on right (129). Top of buttplate has the "No. 1". Fine smooth bore. This is an important rifle in U.S. military history in that it is the first regulation model percussion system made at National armories. It was also the last smooth bore .69 caliber. Exceptionally clean example.
