U.S. Model 1842 Martial issue percussion pistol in .54 caliber signed “I.N. Johnson” and dated 1853. The metal surfaces show a gray to brown patina finish with some scattered light to moderate erosion and pinprick pitting. The stock is fair to good with some cracks and losses around lock plate and some filler in the wood. The lock is well marked and working. The rammer and swivel are excellent restorations. The U.S. military sent out orders the Western frontier to lock up pistols when not in the field because the soldiers would desert if they had a pistol to carry West to the gold fields. This cataloger speculates that the model 1842 was probably one of the most carried pistols in the early California gold rush. Est.:$500-$1,000
