Included in this lot we have a Model 1840 U.S. Cavalry saber and scabbard originating from the 1840's. The sword was manufactured in Solingen, Germany by Schintzler & Kirschbaum and exported to the US. The sword displays a thick steel blade with a iron guard and wire wrapped leather handle. The blade displays a heavy steel blade with a wide fuller along each side with a single cutting edge. The blade is marked reading "S&K" on one side and "FC" on the other side. The guard shows a thick basket style design with metal pommel. The grip shows its original leather wire wrapped construction. The M1840 was known by the soldiers as "Old Wristbreaker" due to its weight and only slightly curved blade. The sword shows a paper tag with information on the piece. It comes with a full metal scabbard. The piece shows wonderful condition with some light wear. Before leaving for the Battle of the Little Bighorn the 7th Cavalry were said to have left their sabers at Fort Abraham Lincoln. The sword measures 41 1/4" long with the blade measuring 35 1/4" long.
