You are bidding on a U.S. Model 1836 .54 Caliber Percussion Frontier Converted Flintlock Government Pistol. Original flintlock U.S. Government issued pistol with lock marked A. Waters, Millbury, MS and dated 1838 that was frontier converted (not the common arsenal conversion) to percussion cap ignition by the round bolster with percussion nipple method in the side of the barrel where the original flintlock “touch hole” was and utilizing an engraved Hawken Plains Rifle style hammer instead of the standard arsenal military type. This shows that this scarce handgun was taken out of service before the 1850s recall and conversion to percussion by the arsenal. This early production example could have been used in the Mexican war of 1848 as well as in early Indian battles on the western frontier. Correct 8 ½” barrel with inspector stamping on the top. All metal surfaces heavily patinaed, retains brass tacks showing probable Indian usage. This was a popular large caliber powerful belt pistol that was also used by early buffalo runners and Indians who galloped their horses into herds of buffalo allowing them close, point blank range lethal shots. Antique firearm. NO FFL transfer or NICS background check required.
