U.S. Militia Staff Officer's Sword, by Ames, 1840-1860, 30-1/2'' etched blade with foliate and Stand at Arms design, cast brass crossguard, which is the same as the prescribed staff and general officer's swords of 1832 in that it is straight double-edged and elliptical in sections. Pommel is the somewhat conventional down-facing helmet. Grips are a single piece of lined carved ivory with decorations. Cross quillions with eaglehead finials. In two-hanger lightly decorated brass scabbard. Pommel and quillion were originally connected by a chain (now missing). Condition is about fine with light carbon spotting to blade, and somewhat dark toning to cast brass furniture, with minor cracks from shrinkage to grip. Est.: $1,200-$1,800.
