U.S. Military Model 1842 “HARPERS FERRY” Percussion Musket likely used in the Civil War then Modified
c. 1842-1853 Civil War Era, U.S. Military Model 1842 “HARPERS FERRY” Percussion Musket, likely used in the Civil War then modified into an Indian Trade Musket for the Fur Trade, Very Fine.
This Civil War Era U.S. Military Model 1842 “HARPERS FERRY” Percussion Musket has a 30", .69 caliber round steel smooth-bore barrel marked on the left side of breech with "V", "P", and an "EAGLE HEAD" proof marks and the date "1853" on the tang. The lock is marked on the tail of the lock plate "HARPERS FERRY", "184#" and the American Eagle Head motif above "US" ahead of the percussion hammer. The lock is in good mechanical working order. The barrel and stock have been reduced. The stock has had the barrel bands removed and spring inlets professionally filled in. Two brass trade rifle ram rod pipes were added as well as a wood ram rod. The long gun retains the original steel butt plate, side plate and trigger guard (which has been modified by closing up the sling swivel and stretching the trigger guard bow most likely for cold weather). The left side of the stock is marked "H.B.C." (Hudson Bay Company ?) and the "Tombstone Fox/E B" (Edward Bond) who inspected arms for the Hudson Bay Company. Overall the stock is solid with light scratches and dings from years of handling. How this Military musket ended up as a trade gun is anyone's guess. A nice attractive weapon.
