(U.S. Marshal) Interesting DS, signed "Jno Smith, Marshall", 1p, nd (paper watermarked 1803), 4to, Pennsylvania. In part, "...I Do Hereby Certify, to the Honorable the Senate, of the United States, of America, that I served the annexed Subpoena, on Jared Ingersol...William S Biddle and Samuel Ewing...by showing them the original..." Almost certainly referring to Jared Ingersoll (1749-1822), a member of the Continental Congress and a signer of the U.S. Constitution. The supeona was probably for a Senate hearing. A very early document from the newly formed U.S. Marshall Service. Small paper loss at upper left corner. Couple of pinholes, o/w VG. $200-300
