this Winchester Model 1897 Riot Gun was manufactured during WWII. This is an example of a Model 1897 with U.S. property markings and Ordnance inspection marks. The lower left side of the receiver is roll-stamped with "U.S." followed by the Ordnance "Shell and Flame" insignia. The left side of the stock is stamped with the Ordnance final inspection marks that consist of the initials "W.B." enclosed in a rectangle above a small Ordnance escutcheon. A small "Shell and Flame" insignia is stamped on the top of the barrel ahead of the Winchester proof mark. The riot gun has a blue finish on the barrel, magazine tube and receiver. The forearm and stock are walnut with an oil finish. The stock is fitted with a black, checkered, hard rubber buttplate embossed with the Winchester logo in a circle. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped: "MODEL 97 - WINCHESTER - 12 GA/-TRADE MARK-" in two lines followed by "2 3/4 CHAMB./CYL." The date of manufacture, "42" (1942) is stamped on the underside of the barrel. Oval Winchester "W/P" proof marks are stamped on the top of the barrel and the receiver. The underside of the barrel is roll-stamped with the serial number, "939662" and the underside of the receiver is roll-stamped "E/939727". The shot gun is not fitted with the sling swivels sometimes found on U.S. property marked, Winchester Model 1897 Riot Guns.
