U.S. MERCHANT MARINE LIEUTENANT COMMANDER'S UNIFORM
U.S. MERCHANT MARINE LIEUTENANT COMMANDER'S UNIFORM
Complete wartime uniform issued to a lieutenant commander in the U.S Merchant marine, with additional uniform accessories. This set, in extraordinarily good condition, includes a blue wool dress jacket and matching matching trousers. The double-breasted jacket has two rows of three brass "United States Maritime Service" buttons at front, and metal wire ribbon and anchor insignia at sleeve ends denoting the wearer's rank. Three medals and a combat bar are affixed to the chest, including a Mariner's Medal (equaivalent of a Purple Heart), a U.S. Naval Reserve qualification pin, and a 1945 Merchant Marine World War II service pin. The combat bar indicates that this officer's vessel was attacked by the enemy. Within is a "Regulation U.S. Navy Uniform" tag as well as a tailor tag from B. Altman and Co., Fifth Avenue, New York. The last name of the owner, "Schmidt", is hand written inside the interior pocket. A visor cap by Art Caps is also present, excellent condition with gold metallic thread chin cord and gold bullion eagle and wreath surrounding the enamel flag of the Moore-McCormack Line. The cap also has black and khaki covers present. Four additional accessories include a pair of the officer's slip-on shoulder boards, tarnished but otherwise unused, a brass belt buckle, and a Merchant Marine veterans' lapel pin. A fine grouping from a battle-tried veteran. Provenance: TIME-LIFE Collection; The War Museum. Exhibition history: New York Historical Society "NYC & WWII"
