U.S. Johnson Model 1836 Single Shot Percussion Pistol, U.S. Navy variant conversion from flintlock, NVSN, .54 cal., 8.5'' barrel, small brass blade front sight marked ''U.S./NWP/P'' in three lines ahead of breech, with stirrup-type captive ramrod with button tip affixed below the muzzle; lockplate with beveled edge toward front and rounded/pointed rear marked ''U.S./Johnson/Middn Conn,/1840'' below hammer, and retains its original up-curved brass flashpan with percussion bolster and nipple; all iron furniture including single barrel band made integral with long serpentine sideplate, triggerguard with lower tang extending to the round ''skull-crusher'' buttcap made integral with the backstrap, which abuts the top barrel tang with its long-groove oval rear sight. Oil-finished one-piece walnut fullstock having raised carved aprons on either side of lock. Mfg'd ca. 1836-44. Condition is very good to fine, the iron parts showing a smooth clean overall gunmetal gray-brown with age patina and sharp markings. Stock is smooth and sound, with particularly sharp ''EB'' (probably Lt. Edmund Byrne, USN) and ''MPL'' (Major M.P. Lomax, USA) inspectors' cartouches on sideplate apron. This scarce U.S. Navy marked Model 1836 variant is identified by its ''N.W.P.'' (Nahum W. Patch) inspector's mark atop the breech and the naval anchor marking on percussion bolster (this latter marking appears to have been intentionally obscured, likely to hide later ownership). Action is extremely strong; smoothbore is clean and mostly bright. Est.: $1,800-$2,400. (Antique)
