Colt Second Model Dragoon revolver manufactured in 1851. The revolver has the distinctive Second Model square-back, brass, trigger guard and cylinder with rectangular stops. The barrel and cylinder originally had a blue finish and the loading lever, receiver and hammer were color casehardened. The cylinder shows traces of the roll-engraved Ranger and Indian fight scene. The revolver has a one-piece, oil-finished, walnut grip. The barrel is fitted with a period, non-factory, dovetail mounted, buckhorn rear sight and a period replacement nickel-silver front sight blade. The top of the barrel lug is roll-stamped with the one-line legend: "ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY". "COLTS/PATENT/US" is roll-stamped on the left side of the frame in three lines. Small "B" Ordnance sub-inspection marks are stamped on the top of the back strap, cylinder, left side of the frame and the loading lever and on the bottom of the trigger guard. The rectangular Ordnance sub-inspection and final inspection marks are stamped on the lower portions of the grip. The serial number, "10353" is stamped in small numerals on the bottom of the barrel lug, wedge, frame, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap. The wedge serial number has been re-stamped. The partial serial number, "0353" is stamped on the loading lever and "353" is stamped on the bottom of the arbor pin. All of the visible serial numbers match. The U.S. Contract Colt Dragoon revolvers typically saw hard service on the frontier in the 1850s. Many of the big Colt Dragoon revolvers were used by both sides during the Civil War. Most Dragoon show the effects of hard use and modifications such as the replacement sights on this revolver are not uncommon.
BBL: 7 1/2 inch
Stock:
Gauge: 44 percussion
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 10353
Condition: Very good. The revolver has an untouched, very attractive deep brown patina. Traces of the original blue finish are visible on the bottom of the barrel beneath the loading lever. The frame retains remnants of the color casehardened finish. Much of the Ranger and Indian fight scene is visible on the cylinder. The rear face of the cylinder and the percussion nipples have moderate to heavy flash pitting. The cylinder safety pins are battered. There is moderate flash pitting in the hammer well and the sides of the hammer have moderate flash pitting. The brass trigger guard and back strap have not been polished and have a pleasing patina, The markings on the barrel and frame are clear and the serial numbers are sharp. The grips are in good condition with a smooth, worn, finish. The Ordnance final inspection and sub-inspection marks on the lower sides of the grip are visible but not legible. This is a solid example of a military issue Colt Second Model Dragoon revolver in original condition with period rear Rifle Style sight. If this Dragoon could talk, what a story it would tell!
