U.S. Harpers Ferry Model 1842 Percussion Musket
This was the first regulation model of a Musket made in percussion ignition at the national armories. The Model 1842 was also the last U.S. arm made in 69 smooth bore caliber and was the first weapon made at both Springfield and Harpers Ferry Armories with fully interchangeable parts. Approximately 103,000 Model 1842 Muskets were made by Harpers Ferry from 1844 to 1855. The lock plate is marked "HARPERS / FERRY / 1852" behind the hammer and the eagle shield motif over "U S" in front of the hammer. Any barrel markings are obscured by heavy pitting and the barrel tang is stamped "37". The buttplate tang is marked "U.S." ahead of the screw. The musket was originally finished bright with a casehardened lock and hammer. Brass blade front sight mounted on the barrel band, no rear sight, a bayonet stud on the underside of the barrel near the muzzle and the correct steel ram rod with trumpet shaped head. Mounted with a full length smooth straight grip stock with only the oval of the stock cartouche visible on the left flat.
