U.S. Harpers Ferry Model 1803 Flintlock Rifle Dated 1817

Manufactured at the U.S. Armory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, in 1817. This second pattern Model 1803 rifle has the 36 inch barrel adopted in 1815. Harpers Ferry resumed production of the Model 1803 in June 1814 to fill the needs of the War of 1812. The rifle has the distinctive half octagon barrel with iron under rib and two iron ramrod pipes and Kentucky style walnut half stock with cheekpiece. The barrel has a dovetail mounted brass front sight blade and fixed iron rear sight. The bevel edged lock plate has a fenced iron pan. The wedge fastened walnut stock has a brass forearm band, tail pipe, side plate, trigger guard with finger spur, crescent buttplate and patch box. The lock plate is marked "HARPERS/FERRY/1817" in vertical lines behind the hammer and stamped with a Federal eagle with "US" in the shield in front of it. A faint proof is visible the left barrel flat.

Very good, original flintlock configuration. The rifle has a dark mottled patina on the barrel and under rib and a smooth dark patina on the action. The brass has a smooth attractive patina. The stock is good with a few hairline cracks, a sliver of wood missing around the lock plate, a chip missing at the stock toe and some minor pressure dents. Mechanically fine. This is a nice example of a U.S. Model 1803 Flintlock Rifle!
