War-dated ALS signed “U. S. Grant, Maj. Gen,” one page both sides, 5.25 x 8, October 6, 1863. Letter to a Captain at the Treasury Department. In part: “The gentleman with Gen. Stewart, the bearer of this, have all shipped cotton on the Steamer Empress from Natchez, Miss.…and were stopped at the mouth of the Red River by the Navy. I have written the Naval Commander at that place, enclosing a copy…and I presume with this the Empress will be permitted to pass. However, for further security I have to request that you issue Treasury passes in addition to the authority already granted.” Lightly trimmed top and bottom edge, lightly affecting a few words at top of page, intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, and a bit of scattered light toning, otherwise fine condition. Shortly before this letter, Grant had just been appointed in charge of the new Military Division of the Mississippi to break the siege at Chattanooga, making Grant the commander of all Western Armies. Grant’s victory eliminated the last Confederate control of Tennessee and opened the door to an invasion of the Deep South.
