DS as president, one page, 8 x 10, April 8, 1869. Printed document issued to the United States Senator John Scott. In full: “Objects interesting to the United States requiring that the Senate should be in session on the 12th instant, to receive and act upon such communications as may be made to it on the part of the Executive, your attendance in the Senate Chamber in this City, on that day, at 12 o’clock noon, is accordingly requested.” Signed at the conclusion by Grant. In fine condition, with two horizontal folds.
Grant issued ‘Proclamation 180 - Convening an Extra Session of the United States Senate,’ citing matters “interesting to the United States” and requesting all senators be in attendance. Among them, naturally, was Scott, an attorney and Republican party politician. As a freshman senator, Scott would have just arrived in Washington to begin his representation of the Keystone State. A former member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, he was elected as a Republican to the US Senate in 1868, but was not a candidate for reelection in 1875.
