War-dated ALS signed “U. S. Grant, Maj. Gen,” one page, 8 x 8.5, January 16, 1864. Letter to General Thomas. The letter reads, in full: "Dear General, Please send the bearer of this, Mrs. Branford under the flag of truce, to the Confederate lines.” Letter has been professionally silked on the reverse and is in good to very good condition, with scorch marks and restored paper loss to bottom and left edges, repaired separations along folds (one affecting signature) and some mild toning and soiling.

That same day, Grant sent a notice to General George H. Thomas that Confederate General James Longstreet had reportedly received reinforcements and was headed toward Knoxville, and ordered the officer to act as a buffer between the Southern forces and Thomas. Amazing, then, that the renowned general would send this to Mrs. Branford heading into enemy lines, even under the flag of truce.
