Ink signature, “U. S. Grant, Sept. 12th 1883,” on an off-white trimmed 6.75 x 3.5 album page. In fine condition. On September 1, 1883, in Chicago, Gen. Grant and his 25-year-old son Jesse joined a tour to celebrate the completion of the Northern Pacific Railroad, begun during his first presidential term. A celebration was held at Gold Creek, Montana Territory, where tracks from the East and the West were joined on September 8, 1883. The ceremonial golden spike was driven by the former President and Henry Villard, President of the Northern Pacific. During his return trip to Chicago, four days after driving the golden spike, Grant signed this autograph for a collector.
