ALS as president, one page both sides, 4.75 x 7.5, Executive Mansion letterhead, July 12, 1869. Letter to Thomas Gamble Pitcher, the Superintendent of the United States Military Academy, in regard to Vermont officer Lewis A. Grant, in full: "I do not know whether you were replied to or not in answer to your letter in regard to Lewis' re-examination. I attended to your request however and told Ms. Grant to write to you that he can be re-examined if he wishes it. The matter will be left entirely to him. If he feels, when the time comes, in September, that he is prepared the examination will be given him. I sincerely hope that Lewis may get through if he is re-examined, but if he does not he is still young enough. My kind regards to the Gen. and your self." Double-matted and framed with a portrait to an overall size of 16.75 x 11.75; the frame's backing has a window for viewing the reverse. In fine condition.
