Handsomely engraved partly printed vellum DS, one page, 15.5 x 19.75, December 20, 1876. President Grant appoints Alexander L. Morton as "First Lieutenant in the Fifth Regiment of Artillery in the service of the United States." Signed at the conclusion by Grant, and countersigned by Secretary of War J. Donald Cameron, with Adjutant General Edward D. Townsend signing in the upper left corner. Commission retains its original dark blue seal. Rolled and in fine condition, with minor brushing to the signature.
