Black-bordered circular issued by the Headquarters Department of Massachusetts, Grand Army of the Republic, announcing the death of General U. S. Grant, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.5 x 8.5, July 24, 1885. In part: "It is with feelings of profound sorrow that the commander has to announce to the comrades of this department the death of our honored and beloved comrade, the illustrious soldier and statesman, the invincible leader, the magnanimous conqueror, General U. S. Grant, who died on the morning of the 23d inst., surrounded by his family and friends." Reverse bears a preprinted signature of Assistant Adjutant General A. C. Monroe. In fine condition, with two horizontal folds.
