ALS as president, two pages, 5.5 x 9, Executive Mansion letterhead, October 29, 1874. Letter to Samuel Sharp. In part: “My recent visit to my farm in Mo. demonstrated to me very clearly that I require there a practical farmer who not only knows how to direct farm work, but one who will go with his hands and make a hand himself. The man I have there knows nothing about farming, but knows all about the care and training of horses. My stock is getting to be so numerous that he has as much as he can attend to with three or four assistants. Now my object in writing this to you is to enquire whether Mr. Jackson, the brother of Bella who has lived with Mrs. Grant, would be a…person to give such a charge to.” In fine condition, with light toning and a chip to the top edge. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. Grant grew up on a farm himself, where he became an expert at managing unruly horses; after leaving the military, he built his own in Missouri. A boldly penned letter with unusual content from a sitting president.
