Manuscript testimonial, signed “U. S. Grant, Lt. Gen. U. S. V.,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, Office of the Great Central Fair letterhead, 1864. In full: “We, the undersigned cheerfully recommend to the open hearts and open purses of our fellow citizens ‘The Great Central Fair’ to be held in Philadelphia in June next, in behalf of that long tried and well proven organization, the U. S. Sanitary Commission.” Scattered toning and an unobtrusive mounting strip affixed to the left border, otherwise fine condition. The Great Central Fair, held in Logan Square from June 7 to 28, 1864, was by far Philadelphia’s most successful Sanitary Commission event. The highlight of the fair was a visit by President Abraham Lincoln, accompanied by the first lady and their son Todd, on June 16. In total, the Fair raised over one million dollars for the Sanitary Commission through admissions, concessions, and souvenirs.
