Manuscript DS as president, one page both sides, 10.5 x 15.5, April 4, 1876. Pardon reads, in part: “Whereas, on the 13th day of January, A.D. 1876, in the Supreme Court of the District of Columbia, holding a criminal term, one John Gerholdt was convicted of an assault, and was sentenced to be imprisoned for three months, and to pay a fine of fifty dollars. And whereas, his term of imprisonment has nearly expired; And whereas, the Judge before whom he was tried, and the United States Attorney, are of opinion that his punishment has been sufficient, and recommend his pardon. Now, therefore, be it known, that I, Ulysses S. Grant, President of the United States of America, in consideration of the premises, divers other good and sufficient reasons me thereunto moving, do hereby grant to the said John Gerholdt, a full and unconditional pardon.” Signed at the conclusion by Grant and countersigned by Secretary of State Hamilton Fish. In very good condition, with partial separations along central horizontal fold, light toning and soiling, two light vertical folds through signature and mounting remnants to lower half of reverse. The white seal is crisp and intact.
