ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, October 11, 1868. Grant writes to a Mr. Alexander from his Galena, Illinois, home. In full: “Your favor the 21st of Sept. for some reason has been misplaced among letters, blank papers, etc. so that it has but this moment come to my attention. I feel very grateful to you for thinking of me in this manner you have whilst far away, and for having provided for me the photograph of the illustrious Italian patriot Garibaldi. If not already mailed you may mail it to me in Washington City where I shall soon be. I have no photograph of myself at this time, and am not in a place to obtain a good one or I would send, with this, one to be presented to General Garibaldi in my name.” In very good to fine condition, an area of light staining to the lower right corner, mirroring of the text on the inner pages, edge chipping to the second page, and show-through from eight spots of mounting residue on the reverse.

This correspondence left Grant’s hands mere weeks before he was to become the 18th President of the United States of America. What began as a formality at the National Convention of the Republican Party in May of 1868 turned Grant into the frontrunner of the race. Here, the commanding general responds to a photo request from the legendary Italian war hero, Giuseppe Garibaldi, a man who has been called ‘The Hero of The Two Worlds’ for his far reaching battles and conquests. It is noted that Garibaldi was also President Lincoln and his advisor’s first choice to lead the Union Army, even over Grant himself. A unique request between two of the greatest military generals of the era, exchanging signed photos like trading cards.
