LS as president, two lightly-lined pages, 5 x 8, Executive Mansion letterhead, May 1, 1871. Letter to Professor E. M. Gallandet, president of the National Deaf Mute College. In full: “I am in receipt of your letter of April 21st. I believe the Institution for the benefit of the deaf and dumb is doing, and will do great good to those unfortunate persons throughout our country. I regret that Congress did not appropriate the amount of money necessary on a permanent basis.” In fine condition, with a uniform shade of mild toning, and a small separation to a horizontal fold on second page.

Edward Miner Gallaudet was an early educator of the deaf in Washington, D.C. who invited President Grant to preside over the 1871 dedication of the college’s newly constructed chapel and refectories. Gallaudet would later use this very letter from President Grant to secure $10,000 in donations from gentlemen for use by the institution. Those funds enabled him, in 1872, to appeal to Congress for a $70,000 appropriation to clear its indebtedness. A tangible piece of history used by Gallaudet to assist those less fortunate.
