U.S. Grant and R.E. Lee. Superb pair of
U.S. Grant and R.E. Lee. Superb pair of cards, collected c. 1918, bearing signatures of each. Neatly tucked into slits on old album page, 5 x 71/2, so that no adhesive was needed. Cards approximately 2 x 3. In dark ink, "U.S. Grant, Lt. Gen. USA." Grant held this rank in 1863, before promotion to full General. Toning at edges, else a choice example. Displayed below, "R.E. Lee," on a separate card, written with a fine pen. Choice. Both signatures beautifully centered. With this album page, a small newspaper clipping of 1918 reporting death of Gen. Lee's daughter, his only surviving child. The third page of the album section (not shown) contains signature of "Your obdt. svt. Wm. Sprague," U.S. Sen. and Gov. of Rhode Island, tucked into page as above. Choice. Four-page section is from old album, light toning at edges, else a rare combination, notable both for the lovely examples and for having been collected so long ago.
