U. S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes Autograph Album Ulysses S. Grant and Rutherford B. Hayes Sign Belva
Ulysses S. Grant and Rutherford B. Hayes Sign Belva A. Lockwood's Autograph Album. Lockwood was an early Woman's Suffrage activist who became the first female lawyer to argue a case before the Supreme Court. She has boldly signed her name and added her Washington D.C. address on the front free endpaper of this 7" x 4.25" autograph book. Most of these signatures are dated 1874, during the period of time that Lockwood was in Washington, D.C. lobbying a bill through Congress to allow women to speak before the Supreme Court. She later ran for president, the first woman to do so, in 1884 and 1888. President Grant, Vice President Henry Wilson and the cabinet as of April 1874 have signed, most adding their office title. The entire Supreme Court has also signed as well as James G. Blaine, Rutherford B. Hayes, James A. Garfield (signature laid down to page), and others. One of the more valuable and collectible autographs in the album is that of General Sherman. Counting Grant and Sherman, there are four Civil War Generals who signed. An interesting collection with great feminist and presidential association. Signatures generally fine, book very good with a small amount of cover wear.
