U.S. Contract Starr 1812-1813 Cavalry Saber
This early U.S. Cavalry saber is one of 4000 sabers manufactured by Nathan Starr of Middletown, Connecticut between 1813 and 1817. The saber has a 33-3/4 inch, curved blade with single edge and clipped point. The ricasso is stamped with a "P" above the "OA" initials of Ordnance Inspector Oliver Allen and "NSTARR/US". A "P" is also stamped on the face of the knuckle bow. The saber has an iron, D-shaped knuckle bow, birds head pommel and down-turned quillian. The grip has a leather cover. The saber is complete with an iron scabbard with two small suspension rings.

Very good. The blade has about 50% of the original bright finish with scattered age discoloration and some minor pitting near the point. The ricasso marks are crisp. The hilt has a dark age patina. The leather grip cover is intact but the wire wrap is missing. The iron scabbard has a dark patina with heavy pitting and several shallow dents. This is a very good example of an early U.S. contract cavalry saber.
