This example was manufactured between 1863 and 1865. There is a German silver blade front sight and an adjustable ladder rear sight. The top of the receiver is marked "SPENCER REPEATING/RIFLE CO. BOSTON, MASS./PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860" and the serial number is marked on the top rear of the receiver. There is an "M" stamped on the left side of the receiver in front of the saddle ring bar and on the lever. The left side of the barrel at the breech is stamped "S/R". Mounted on a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a boxed "MMJ" script cartouche on the left wrist and a smooth steel buttplate.

Good, the barrel has a smooth brown patina with a few dings. The receiver has a mostly brown patina with areas of silver patina in the protected areas with some scattered minor pitting and some scratches and dings. The stock is good with legible cartouche, a period saddle rub mark on left side of butt, a large chip absent from the forearm along with a number of scratches, dings and bruises. Mechanically fine.
