This is an example of a U.S. Colt Single Action Cavalry Revolver with factory letter. The letter states that this revolver was delivered to the U.S. Government Inspector at the Colt Plant on July 11, 1890. The revolver was inspected by Ordnance Sub-Inspector Rinaldo A. Carr. The revolver is stamped with Carr's "R.A.C." mark on the underside of the barrel, the frame, cylinder and the right grip heel. "P" proof marks are stamped on the underside of the barrel and on the side of the cylinder. The full serial number, "133366" is stamped on the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number, "3366" is stamped on the barrel and the cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the 'Elongated Block Address': "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.". The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt 'Three-Dates/Three-Line' patent markings followed by the "U.S." property mark. The assembly number "1328" is stamped on the inside of the loading gate. "K" is stamped behind the serial number on the trigger guard and back strap. Illegible Ordnance and Sub-Inspector's marks are stamped on the sides of the grip. The revolver is fitted with the oval ejector rod head used and Single Action Cavalry revolvers in the 113,000-140,361 serial number range. The revolver has a military blue finish on the barrel, ejector housing, trigger guard, back strap and cylinder. The frame, hammer and loading gate have a color casehardened finish. The grip is walnut with an oil finish. The revolver is complete with a Model 1885 Holster made by Spanish-American War contractor Lanz, Owens & Co. The holster is made of black leather and has two holes in the flap to accommodate either a Colt Single Action or S&W Schofield revolver. The holster body is embossed with "U.S." in an oval. The back of the holster has the wide belt loop designed to fit over a Mills cartridge belt. The loop is stamped: "LANZ & OWENS" in an arch above "CHICAGO".
BBL: 7 1/2 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 45 Colt
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 133366
Condition: Very fine as partially restored professionally. "Feathered" polishing marks are visible on the replacement, renumbered to match barrel on either side of the front sight blade and above the ejector housing stud. The barrel and ejector housing have finish wear on contact points and some scattered, minor scratches. The cylinder shows light edge wear and some turn marks. The trigger guard has nearly all of the blue finish intact. The back strap shows some handling wear and the blue finish has faded to a gray patina. Nearly 75% of the casehardened finish is present on the frame hammer and loading gate. The case colors are strong. The action is tight and functions perfectly. The inspector's and sub-inspector's marks on the lower sides of the replacement grip are restamped, faint and illegible. The original holster is in very good condition. The stitching is tight and the leather surfaces are smooth. there are a number of light scuff marks on the back edge holster and top of the flap. The maker's cartouche on the back of the holster is crisp. This is a representative example of a late production Colt Single Action Cavalry Revolver with Spanish-American War M1885 Holster.
