This is a 3rd Model 1851 "Army-Navy" revolver in the 42000-80000 serial number range which were purchased by the U.S. Army prior to the Civil War. Revolvers in this serial number range were issued to the 1st and 2nd Cavalry Regiments and were used extensively in campaigns against hostile Indians in and prior to the Civil War. The top of the barrel flat is marked Colt's "--ADDRESS SAML COLT HARTFORD CT.--" and the left side of the frame is marked "COLT'S / PATENT / U.S.". The matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the barrel, frame, trigger guard, cylinder and back strap, with the partial serial number "4633" marked on the loading lever, wedge and cylinder pin. There are single letter inspection marks on the barrel, trigger guard, cylinder and back strap. This pistol has the blue barrel and cylinder, silver plated brass back strap and trigger guard, casehardened frame, loading lever and hammer. Fitted with a smooth one piece walnut grip with a faint boxed cartouche on the bottom of both sides.
BBL: 7 1/2 inch octagon
Stock:
Gauge: 36 percussion
Finish: blue/casehardened/silver
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 64633
Condition: Very good as partially refinished. The revolver retains strong traces of the refinished blue finish on the left side of the barrel lug around the wedge, on the screws, on the lower barrel flats and on the rear of the cylinder between the nipples. The screws on the trigger guard and grip frame retain almost all of the bright niter blue finish. The brass has been cleaned some time ago and shows a mix of bright brass and aged patina. The loading lever, frame and hammer retain most of the fading refurbished casehardened colors, with areas of vivid colors on the loading lever. The grips have a pleasant hand rubbed patina and remain fine with some minor wear on the lower edges and overall some scattered minor dings, dents and a couple of small gouges. The cartouches are light, but visible. The cylinder scene is still very clear and the markings crisp and clear. The action is fine. A nice representative example of a U.S. 1851 Navy Army Contract revolver with all original matching parts that has been very professionally enhanced!
