U.S. Colt Model 1851 Army Contract Navy Percussion Revolver

Manufactured in 1856, this is a 3rd Model 1851 "Army-Navy" revolver in the 42,000-80,000 serial number range, which were purchased by the U.S. Army prior to the Civil War. Revolvers in this serial number range were issued to the 1st and 2nd Cavalry Regiments and were used extensively in campaigns against hostile Indians in and prior to the Civil War. These revolvers also saw service during the Civil War and saw additional service on the Frontier after being sold as surplus. The top of the barrel flat is marked "--ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW YORK CITY--" and the left side of the frame is marked "COLTS/PATENT/U.S." Single letter inspection marks (A and M) are found on the grip straps and cylinder. The cylinder has the navy battle scene and the grip straps are silver plated brass. The matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the barrel, frame, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap with the partial serial number "3528" on the loading lever, cylinder pin and wedge. Fitted with a one piece grip that is stamped "JOHN H [illegible]" on the sides.

Good. The revolver has a dark mottled brown patina with some minor pitting. Traces of the cylinder scene remain. A percussion nipple is blown out and the barrel wedge screw is missing the head. The grip straps retain traces of original silver plating in the protected areas with the exposed brass having an aged patina. The grip is very good with some minor pressure dents and scratches. Mechanically fine.
