From 1895 to 1903 a number of "US" marked Single Action Army revolvers, like this one, were returned to either the Colt factory or Springfield Armory where they were modified (to 5 1/2 inch barrel length), dismantled and refinished, often with little regard to which gun the refinished parts came from, resulting in a mix of serial numbers and markings. This revolver has a 5 1/2 inch barrel, casehardened frame and blue remaining parts. The serial numbers are mixed on these altered models and they were remarked by inspectors of the era. This revolver is serial numbered "11523" on the frame, and "8418" on the trigger guard and back strap, with a small "A" below the trigger guard number. The cylinder is un-numbered. It bears the standard one line address on top of the barrel and the two line, two patent date marking on the left side of the frame followed by "U.S.". The loading gate is marked with the assembly number "988". It has the standard blade front and frame notch rear sights, bulls eye ejector rod head and is fitted with the correct smooth one-piece walnut grip with "1903" over a "R.A.C." cartouche on the lower right side and "RAC" stamped on the bottom of the right side. The accompanying factory letter states that the revolver was returned to the Colt factory, repaired, remodeled and reshipped in 1903. The letter verifies the caliber, 5 1/2 inch barrel, blue finish with grips as "Not Listed" and that it was shipped as 1 of 317 to the Commanding Officer at Springfield Armory, Springfield, Massachusetts on April 21, 1903.
