U.S. Colt Ainsworth Inspected Single Action Army Cavalry Revolver
Manufactured in 1874, the second year of production, this U.S. Cavalry Colt revolver features the standard blade front and notch rear sights. The top of the barrel is marked with the early slant letter "+ COLT'S PT. F. A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A+." with the two line, two patent date marking on the left side of the frame followed by "U.S.". The bottom of the barrel is marked with a small "P" and "A" just ahead of the cylinder pin, an "A" on the cylinder, top of the backstrap and just below the serial number on the trigger guard. There is a "C" marked in the hammer well. The ejector rod head is the "bulls eye" or donut style with the hole in the center. The complete matching serial number is marked on the frame, trigger guard, backstrap and the cylinder and barrel under the ejector housing are marked with the partial serial number "3026". It is fitted with smooth one piece walnut grips absent of any cartouches. Orville W. Ainsworth was the first Principal Sub-Inspector assigned to Colt by the War Department.

Condition: Rebarreled and refinished with the metal surfaces now a smooth mottled artificial brown and gray patina. There is some minor pitting on the forward edge of the cylinder. Some of the casehardening pattern remains on the frame and hammer. All screws are very good showing minimal marring. The grip is good with moderate lower edge wear, small repaired chip on each toe and a pleasant hand rubbed patina. The markings are clear. The cylinder locks up tightly and the action is fine.
