U.S. Civil War Veterans G.A.R. Sword, designed after the 1860 Staff and Field Officer's sword, made for U.S. Civil War veterans and members of the Grand Army of the Republic. The 29.5" double-edged diamond-shaped blade is etch decorated with "U.S.", floral motifs, eagle with shield, crossed flags, cannon, shield, and drum. There is no maker's mark on the ricasso. Brass guard has a clam shell front with the GAR logo, anchor and crossed rifles for all branches of service. Quillion is a turned-down trumpet shape. Knuckle guard has crossed cannons, laurel leaves, and berries. Grip is grooved wood covered with black sharkskin and is missing its wire wrapping. Pommel features an eagle with shield around the side and sunburst top. Scabbard is nickel plated with decorated brass hanger fittings and a brass drag. OAL is 37". Condition is good, the blade showing age graying and scattered light rust patina, with nice clear etchings. Guard has play and looseness where it meets the blade, there is some old polish residue in the crevices. Grip is sound with a couple of small scuffs to the sharkskin. Pommel and tang peen are intact and fairly tight. Scabbard shows wear to the nickel-plated finish over most of the surface and some light rust, but no dings or dents. There is no blade washer present. Est.: $150-$250.
