U.S. Civil War Savage Navy Model Percussion Revolver

Approximately 20,000 of these unique revolvers were manufactured from 1861 to around 1865. Roughly 12,000 were purchased under government contracts and the remaining were civilian sales. The frame top strap is marked "SAVAGE R.F.A. Co. MIDDLETOWN. CT./H.S.NORTH PATENTED JUNE 17 1856/JANUARY 18 1859. MAY 15 1860". Single letter inspector marks are found on most of the major components. The unique action functions with a lever and a trigger. The lever has a loop for the middle finger. When the lever is pulled back the cylinder turns and the hammer is cocked, the lever is released and the trigger is pulled to fire the weapon. The left grip panel has a script letter cartouche.

Fine. The revolver retains 40% original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown-gray patina. Traces of original case colors remain on the hammer and lever. The grips are fine with a couple very small chips missing from the bottoms and a few faint handling marks. The cartouche is weak, but legible. Mechanically excellent.
