U.S. Civil War Contract Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver
Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver manufactured in 1863. This U.S. contract Civil War revolver has a military blue finish on the barrel, cylinder and back strap, casehardened loading lever and frame, brass trigger guard and oil-finished walnut grip. The revolver has a three-screw frame with stock lug cut-outs in the recoil shields and an indentation in the butt for a stock yoke. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Texas Navy battle scene and "COLT'S PATENT NO.". The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "-ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-" in a single line. The left side of the frame is stamped "COLTS/PATENT" in two lines. Single letter Ordnance sub-inspection marks are stamped on most components. "D" is stamped on the barrel lug and cylinder. "H" is stamped on the trigger guard and backstrap. The heel of the left grip is stamped with an Ordnance sub-inspectors mark that consists of two script initials in a rectangle. The Ordnance final inspection mark consisting of two script initials in a rectangle with rounded ends is stamped on the right grip heel. The full serial number, "143691" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and backstrap. The cylinder and the cylinder arbor pin are stamped with the partial serial number "3691". The wedge is numbered "3760". The serial numbers match on all numbered components except for the wedge.

Condition: Very fine as partially refinished. The revolver retains 75% of the original military blue on the barrel. The barrel also has holster wear at the muzzle but the military blue finish on the lug and lower two-thirds on the barrel is intact. The frame retains 70% of the vivid case colors. The backstrap has a silver gray patina with most of the refinished blue finish present on the top of the backstrap and butt. The cylinder has 40 % of the original blue finish remaining. The case colors on the loading lever, frame and hammer are faded and have a silver patina on contact points; 80% of the casehardened finish is intact. The brass trigger guard and grip strap have an attractive aged patina. All of the Texas Navy scene remains on the cylinder. All of the cylinder pins remain intact. There is some very minor flash pitting on the percussion nipples and front edge of the cylinder. The serial numbers, Ordnance inspection marks and Colt markings are crisp. All of the Ordnance sub-inspection marks are sharp. The final inspector's and sub-inspector's markings on the grip are faint but legible. The Colt Model 1860 Revolver was the primary handgun issued to Federal cavalry regiments during the Civil War and remained in service until it was replaced by the Colt Model 1873 Single Action Cavalry revolver in 1874-75. This is a very fine representation example of a Civil War Model 1860 Army Revolver.
