This is an example of a U.S. Colt Model 1873 Cavalry Revolver manufactured in 1875, and subsequently refurbished by Colt in 1895 for issue to the New York State Militia. The serial number "17282" is listed twice on page 43 of "CAVALRY & ARTILLERY REVOLVERS" by Kopec and Fenn as one of the approximately 840 Model 1873 Cavalry Revolvers issued to the New York State Militia. The serial number is listed as one of 54 Issued to the N.Y. Militia within the 1875 Sub-inspected Series and one of 11 listed as having "C&J" Sub-inspectors marks. The revolver appears to have had the standard Colt military blue finish on the barrel, ejector housing, cylinder and trigger guard with casehardened frame and hammer. The top of the barrel is marked with the one line address flanked by a "+" and the left side of the frame is marked with the two line, two patent dates followed by "U.S.". The bottom of the barrel is marked with the letter "P" and "A" (the latter for Ainsworth), "P" and "C", (A.P. Casey) are marked on the cylinder, "C" in the hammer slot above the firing pin hole and on top of the back strap. The letter "J" is marked on the trigger guard below the serial number. The matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard, back strap and cylinder, the bottom of the replaced mismatched barrel (under the ejector housing) is marked "9593". The loading gate is marked with the assembly number "285". The ejector rod head is the early round pattern, standard blade front and frame notch rear sights, and fitted with a smooth one piece walnut grip. The right side is stamped "ST G / 28" and crudely marked "NY", and the bottom right side is stamped "R.A.C.". Author John Kopec states on page 129 of CAVALRY & ARTILLERY REVOLVERS that many New York Militia Colt Model 1873 Revolvers are fitted with lanyard swivels, however this particular revolver is not fitted with a lanyard.
BBL: 7 1/2 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 45 Long Colt
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 17282
Condition: Very good and partially restored (cylinder and back strap number restamped). The barrel retains 20% scattered blue finish on the barrel with a smooth gray patina on the balance. The cylinder and back strap have a smooth gray patina and there is strong blue finish in protected areas of the trigger guard with a smooth gray patina on the balance. There are several minor dings on the cylinder. The hammer retains most of the vivid case colors. The frame retains strong case colors in protected areas with a smooth mottled gray patina on the balance, with a small amount of very minor pitting around the renumbered cylinder. The slightly undersize grip is good with some wear on the lower edges and a few scattered minor dents and dings. The action is excellent.
