U.S. Burnside/Springfield Spencer Model 1865/1871 Repeating Conversion Rifle

Produced by the Burnside Rifle Company as a carbine, and converted by Springfield Arsenal circa 1871 into a rifle. Fitted with the distinctive 3-groove rifled barrel and forearm with double bands, only 1108 arms are believed to have undergone this upgrade. Bayonet lug blade front and folding ladder rear sights, with a matching serial number on the left side near the breech. Casehardened frame, marked on top "MODEL/1865" and "SPENCER REPEATING RIFLE/PAT'D MARCH 6. 1860/MANUF D AT PROV. R.I./BY BURNSIDE RIFLE Co." and fitted with a Stabler magazine cutoff. The sling bar and ring are present. Smooth, straight grip stock with sling swivels, cleaning rod and a smooth buttplate.

Fair, with a mixed brown and gray patina overall, showing dents concentrated on the underside of the barrel, scattered spotting and handling marks. Stock has been lightly sanded, with some cracking at the wrist, scattered dents and minor scratches. Mechanically very good.
