Unique collection of documents regarding b ullion deposits at the USAO New York. These documents in themselves are vey rare, and to have a collection of them is even rarer.
This group shows some important and interesting things that can be gained from such a collecction.Three of the bullion receipts are sourced from Montana gold. Two are brought to the NYAO from Elling's bank in Virginia City Montana (1875) through their partner banker Kountz Bros. Those two receipts are also for gold amalgam amounting to about 300 troy ounces average for the two gold deposits. One of the two deposits was paid in gold coin, as noted on an ancillary document The third Montana sourced bullion was through bankers Donnell, Lawson & Co, but this time for "grains" of gold (aka placer gold), 101 ounces (1874).
The last NYAO bullion receipt may be the lone example I've ever seen (FH) of a foreign gold deposit, this time from African placer gold. The last piece is from Harper's Weekly, a story on the NYAO. New York City New York Franklin Collection
