U.S. Ancient & Honorable Artillery Company Sword and Belt, ca. 1870-1890, 29'' curved blade, 33-1/2'' overall. The Ancient & Honorable Artillery Co. of Massachusetts is the oldest chartered military organization in North America and dates back to the French & Indian War. Formed in 1637, Gov. Winthrop granted them a charter in March 1638. Grip is wire-wrapped leather-covered wood; there is ferrule at the base of grip which is surmounted by a backstrap which extends to form a cover for the semi-bird's head pommel. Guard is a half-basket pattern. Beautiful two-hanger leather scabbard with chape, throat, and centerpiece of brass. Belt is of leather construction with three lame bands, buckle, and three-button fastener; double sword hanger present. Condition is very good overall. Sword with some old dried grease in the fuller, with carbon spotting near ricasso. Wires remain mostly tight with approx. 60%-70% leather remaining to handle with some wood showing thru at ap!
ex. Scabbard remains remarkably complete with no losses to stitching, light scuffs, and minor dings near drag. Leather washer is present and complete. Belt is in fair condition with wear to Moraccan leather back of sword hangers, tarnishing to lame, with some damage from poor storage. Overall a very nice ensemble nearly 140 years old. Est.: $300-$500.
