U.S. 1881 Mounted Engineer Officer's Helmet, adapted in 1881 and based on the early 1872 Cavalry pattern. The date 1881 marked a distinct shift in American military attire. U.S. Army adopted Prussian patterns instead of French designs. U.S. military lost its interest in things French following their poor showing in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. Horsehead mane indicates mounted service. The castle motif and button indicates this hat belonged to a Mounted Engineer. Helmet is high grade black wool over cork with stamped brass fitting and hardware, with crimson horsehair mane. Used from 1881 to 1902. Condition is excellent with light checking to the brim edge. Sweatband shows minor losses. Maker's label is missing. Braid appears to be of later mfg. Est.: $300-$600.
