U-BOAT TORPEDOMAN'S WEHRPASS
U-BOAT TORPEDOMAN'S WEHRPASS
The wehrpass of U-boat torpedoman Erich Dittkowski whose fate at war's end is unknown. Born in eastern Germany in 1920, he was assigned to the 5th Naval Recruit Depot on Apr. 14, 1939 and remained there until Sep. 29. He then trained at a U-boat school until Apr. 3, 1940 until he was attached to an unspecified U-boat of the 7th U-Boat Flotilla with which he served for the next one year and twenty days. Dittkowski was then sent for training as a torpedoman and for deck gun firing until Mar. 5, 1942 when he is assigned to the War Ship Construction Instructional Detachment for U-Boats. The wehrpass had not been closed-out, but in all likelihood Dittkowski was yet again returned to sea for active service. Very good. Provenance: TIME-LIFE Collection, The War Museum.
