U-BOAT MACHINIST MATE'S DEATH CERTIFICATE
Uncommon partly-printed D.S., 1p. large 4to., [Lorient?], Dec. 28, 1943, an ornate death certificate issued for U-174 Machinist's Mate Karl Behnke indicating his death for "Fuhrer, People and Fatherland" on Apr. 28, 1943 and signed by an unknown officer, possibly Korvettenkapitan Kuhnke. Simply framed. U-174 departed her French base on 18 March 1943, bound for the U.S. East Coast. On 27 April, she was attacked and sunk by an American Lockheed Ventura aircraft southwest of Newfoundland. Fifty-three men died; there were no survivors.
