U-BOAT CREWMAN'S MEMORIAL MARKER AND DEATH NOTICE CARD
U-BOAT CREWMAN'S MEMORIAL MARKER AND DEATH NOTICE CARD
Saddening lot of two items surrounding the death of 20 year-old U-boat man Adolf Kaut, a recipient of the Iron Cross, 2nd Class and the U-Boat Badge. Included is: a memorial marker bearing Kaut's death notice within, a 10" x 8 1/2" steel frame with ground spike, wood lathe on verso, containing a 8" x 6" black-bordered death notice mentioning his death in action while at sea in U-boat service, June 9, 1944, his various awards, memorial service arrangements, and the names of his next of kin. Also present is Kaut's black bordered memorial card picturing the young seaman which was likely also contained within the marker. Both items water-damaged. U-613, aboard which Kaut served, was depth charged and sunk north of the Azores on July 23, 1943 resulting in the loss of all hands. Whether a funeral service was held for Kaut and a relic of his life was buried in place of his remains is unknown - if so, this relic may have served as a temporary grave marker. Provenance: TIME-LIFE Collection, The War Museum.
