U-892 LIFE RING
U-892 LIFE RING
Life ring removed from German U-892, a Type IX C submarine built by A.G. Wesser, Bremen launched in 1944 but never commissioned. The 23" diameter ring bears a gray painted canvas cover enclosing kapok within, hemp rope about the body, and the name of the vessel stenciled on one side. A seller's note which accompanies the ring indicates that this relic was obtained from a Norfolk Navy Yard welder when the vessel was scrapped. U-892 was captured by the British and given to the U.S. in 1946 as part of the one-third share of the thirty U-boats that were not destroyed at the end of the war. Provenance: The War Museum, New York.
